Chicago, IL – June 24, 2025 – Today marks the release of Giving USA 2025: The Annual Report on Philanthropy, the most comprehensive and longest-running analysis of charitable giving in the United States. Produced by the Giving USA Foundation, a public service initiative of The Giving Institute, in partnership with the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy, this report chronicles giving trends and philanthropic behavior across the country. Campbell & Company is proud to sponsor the report as a long-standing member of The Giving Institute.
The newly released data offers a detailed look at giving from individuals, foundations, corporations, and bequests during calendar year 2024. As organizations across the nonprofit sector continue to navigate rapid shifts in donor behavior, economic uncertainty, and increasing community needs, Giving USA serves as both a historical touchstone and a forward-looking planning resource.
“While the giving results from 2024 are heartening and underscore the vital role of generosity in our society, we are closely watching how philanthropy will respond to declining government funding and volatile economic conditions in 2025. No doubt giving from all sources must play a critical role in maintaining the social safety net and ensuring that Americans continue to have access to the services and experiences that contribute to our well-being.” – Kate Roosevelt, Campbell & Company Co-President
Total Charitable Giving: In 2024, giving in the United States reached $592.50 billion, representing a 6.3% increase over 2023 in current dollars. While this figure does not surpass the inflation-adjusted high set in 2021, it represents the highest giving total ever in current dollars—underscoring the enduring strength of American philanthropy. Individuals, foundations, and corporations all increased their giving by 8.2%, 2.4%, and 9.1%, respectively, and giving by bequests declined by 1.6%.
Economic Factors: Giving closely mirrored broader economic trends. The U.S. economy in 2024 saw a tech-driven surge, with the S&P 500 posting a gain of over 20%. Growth in GDP, disposable income, and corporate profits created a favorable climate for charitable giving.
Individual Giving: Individuals remained the largest driver of charitable giving, comprising two-thirds (approximately $392.45 billion) of all giving in 2024 and maintaining an annualized growth rate of 5.4% over the last five years.
Corporate Giving: Corporate donations—estimated at 1.1% of pre-tax profits—accounted for 7% of total giving in 2024, the highest share recorded in the past four decades. This reflects both rising profits and deepening commitments to corporate social responsibility.
Foundation Giving: Foundations contributed approximately $110 billion in 2024, asserting growing influence in the philanthropic ecosystem. With expanded roles as funders, conveners, and change agents – and record assets under management – foundations continue to shape the field in meaningful ways.
Giving by Recipient Sector:
Sector Resilience: Nonprofits across all nine tracked subsectors demonstrated adaptability and strategic agility in 2024. Seven of the nine experienced inflation-adjusted growth, building on lessons learned during the COVID era and a challenging 2023.
As nonprofits face continued volatility in funding and rising demand for services, the findings of Giving USA 2025 reinforce the importance of strategic donor engagement, stewardship, and innovation in fundraising practices.
