Enrollment Challenges Are Testing More Than Admissions Offices

Higher education institutions are facing enrollment crises from all directions—and the much-discussed “enrollment cliff” is only part of the story. In research we recently published in partnership with CASE Insights, we found that nearly 70% of institutions have experienced, are experiencing, or expect to experience significant enrollment challenges in the next five years. The causes extend well beyond demographics, including declining confidence in the value of higher education, academic programs that fail to align with market demand, scholarship limitations, and shifts in public policy.

The study also highlights how institutions are responding. Rather than treating enrollment as solely an admissions issue, colleges and universities are increasingly engaging advancement and marketing teams as strategic partners in addressing enrollment challenges. Institutions are leveraging philanthropy to help meet earned revenue gaps, strengthening storytelling and shifting brand positioning, and embracing collaborative, data-informed approaches to navigate an increasingly complex environment.
