January 11, 2016 (Chicago, IL) – In 2015, nearly half (46 percent) of nonprofit organizations reported to be currently involved in a campaign, either capital, endowment, comprehensive, or special campaigns, according to a recent report released by the Nonprofit Research Collaborative (NRC). In this study, The Special Report on Nonprofit Fundraising Campaigns, the NRC surveyed over 1,071 organizations during the summer of 2015 and assessed their involvement in fundraising vehicles such as capital, endowment, comprehensive, or special campaigns. The report also provides insight regarding overall charitable receipts in early 2015 including regional, sector, and organizational size comparisons.

Human service organizations address some of the most complex problems ingrained in our society. Donors don’t need convincing that these are worthy causes— on the contrary, U.S. Trust Study of High Net Worth Philanthropy found 81 percent of high-net worth households gave to organizations addressing basic needs in 2014, and the sector is growing steadily. Yet, The Chronicle of Philanthropy reported that of the $10.2 billion given by America’s top 50 most generous philanthropists in 2014, not a single U.S. human service organization received a gift of $200 million or more.

Mega donors are giving to human service organizations, but they aren’t giving mega gifts.

On December 16, 2014 the Senate passed HR 5771 which included a retroactive enactment of the IRA Rollover to January 1, 2014. This provision gives donors age 70 ½ and older the opportunity to transfer up to $100,000 from their IRA to a qualified public charity free of federal income tax. For donors who want to do an IRA charitable rollover for the 2014 tax year, they can do it with near certainty as  President Obama is expected to sign off on the one-year retroactive extension right away.

On a recent trip to Ireland with my wife, we were able to meet some of her relatives for the first time and visit the family farm on which her grandfather was born. We learned her cousins are all on Facebook, so my wife has since connected with them permanently through social media. When she first visited two of her cousins’ pages last week, she found a video of each of them pouring a bucket of ice water over their heads in support of ALS, proving the immense power and reach of social media.
