Americans gave an estimated $335.17 billion to charitable causes in 2013, representing 4.4 percent growth (3.0 percent adjusted for inflation) from the previous year, according to Giving USA 2014: The Annual Report on Philanthropy. This continues the trend of steady growth that we have observed since the recession, and Giving USA is optimistic that as soon as next year giving should return to pre-2008 levels.

Americans gave 4 percent (.09% adjusted for inflation) more in 2011 compared to 2010, according to Giving USA 2011, the 57th annual report by the Giving USA Foundation and the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University. Donations to charity rose to $298.42 billion, but were still $11 billion below a 2007 record as giving continues to recover from the recession. As organizations weather through the economic challenges, two distinct trends have emerged in executive recruitment: organizations want quality high-level candidates and they want them fast.

Campbell & Company presented the Giving USA 2012 report to more than 800 attendees at events around the country and an internationally-attended webinar. The report found that, while giving continues to increase in the wake of the Great Recession, recovery remains flatter compared to periods after previous downturns. Nonprofit leaders reacted to the data, not only sharing their organizations’ experiences but also recommending strategies for the year to come. Many emphasized opportunities to better identify, engage and steward potential supporters in this environment.
