With the country at nearly full employment, hiring managers are feeling the pinch of a tight workforce. Traditionally, higher employment signals accelerated turnover and more spirited bidding for top talent.
Even in less competitive talent environments, nonprofits have faced significant challenges in hiring experienced fundraisers for more than a decade. As philanthropic revenues become more important to the success of all organizations, higher education institutions have set ambitious goals for comprehensive campaigns that require large teams of effective fundraisers.
For nonprofit organizations, the decision to embark on a comprehensive campaign can be one of the most significant they will ever make. The magnitude of a campaign raises important questions, such as “who will lead the campaign?” or “are we using our database wisely?”
A campaign also calls forth well-founded worries, such as the perception that the annual fund will suffer. Since the most common early donors to a campaign are those who already make annual gifts, Campbell & Company decided to explore the conventional wisdom that campaigns cannibalize annual giving.

The 2016 presidential election was called, and the reaction was swift: gifts poured into nonprofits typically associated with progressive causes, from the environment to social justice. Popularly termed “rage giving,” this grassroots phenomenon continued into 2017, as donors responded to President Trump’s travel ban as well as other executive orders and announcements. Metrics from the giving surge lit up the news—$24 million raised online by the American Civil Liberties Union in one weekend,[1] 300,000 gifts to Planned Parenthood in six weeks,[2] a 50-fold increase in online gifts to the Anti-Defamation League on November 9th.[3]

The five states that make up the Northwest each face distinct philanthropic challenges and opportunities. While several major studies are published on U.S. giving each year, regional data is traditionally less accessible. To address this gap and help Northwest nonprofits adapt to the philanthropic landscape in which they operate, we created “Unique Northwest: Distinct Giving Trends and Strategies for Five Distinct States.”

Since its inception in 2012, we have seen exponential growth in the popularity and visibility of #GivingTuesday. Now a global movement engaging thousands of organizations worldwide, it’s a day when charities, families, businesses, community centers, and individuals around the world will come together for a common purpose: to celebrate generosity and to give to their favorite causes.

This trend continues to grow, with the number of international students in the U.S. reaching a record high of 1,043,839 in the 2015-2016 academic year.[1]

To better understand philanthropy in California, we assembled a comprehensive overview of giving trends in the state since the Great Recession of 2007–2009. This report is designed to help professionals and organizations in California navigate the uneven philanthropic landscape that has persisted ever since the banking and housing crises of those years first hit. As a harbinger of larger trends throughout the nation, we also hope this report will inform individuals engaged in philanthropic work in communities and other regions throughout the nation.

around the world as our economy and society have globalized in the last few decades. According to the Open Doors Report on International Exchange, the number of international students in the U.S. reached a record high of 1,043,839 in the 2015-2016 academic year.[1]
Economic and cultural globalization has made American philanthropy an undeniably international affair. Nowhere is this more visible than in academic institutions, where the continued exponential growth of international student enrollment from countries like China, India, Hong Kong, South Korea, and many others has changed educational culture and the fundraising environment that supports it.
