Adam Wilhelm is a Vice President at Campbell & Company. A hands-on collaborator, Adam engages organizational leadership and boards and translates their visions into implementable activities for fundraising teams.

The health care market has been going through considerable changes including many physicians shifting from having their own private practice to salaried jobs. According to the American Medical Association (AMA) about 60 percent of family doctors and pediatricians, 50 percent of surgeons and 25 percent of surgical subspecialists are  already employees rather than independents. That number is predicted to grow.

The Chronicle of Philanthropy recently published an article featuring William (Bill) McGinly, 67, current President and CEO of the Association for Healthcare Philanthropy (AHP) on his 30 year-long career. During his tenure, AHP has experienced membership and operating revenue growth as well as broad influence in improving reporting standards for efficiency and effectiveness in health care philanthropy. McGinly has been named to The NonProfit Times Power & Influence Top 50 list for 15 consecutive years. With his impressive term, as the mere number of years suggests, McGinly provides some real gems as he announces his retirement. I’d like to share some of those:

Amid the uncertainty in the industry, hospitals remain the major centers of American health care. According to a report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 35.1 million people were discharged from inpatient care at non-federal hospitals in 2010. There were more than 100 million outpatient department visits and almost 130 million visits to emergency departments.

Hospitals are waking up to a new fundraising landscape. The environment has been challenged by the recent recession as well as changing healthcare mandates. Both are creating sweeping changes in the business of healthcare. As a result, philanthropic operations are becoming more strategic, and the role of philanthropy is increasing in stature as it becomes a more dependable source of consistent revenue for its institutions.

The AHP Annual Report on Giving for FY2011 shows continued growth in healthcare fundraising.  “As we move into 2013, hospitals and other healthcare organizations have reason to be encouraged about their philanthropic potential,” says Adam Wilhelm, Senior Consultant at Campbell & Company, a national fundraising consulting and executive search firm based in Chicago.  “On average, we have seen healthcare giving not only rise to pre-recession levels, but reach its highest level in more than a decade.”
