Event: Stereotypes Be Gone! How Inherent Assumptions Hamper Donor and Fundraiser Relationships
Thursday, June 11, 2020: 9:30 - 10:45am Pacific at the AFP Advancement Northwest Annual Conference
As a fundraiser, what assumptions do you make about your donors based on their race, gender, and sexual orientation? And what assumptions do others in the field make about you? This interactive session will unpack prevailing stereotypes about donors and fundraisers and work to break them down.
Campbell & Company fundraising consultant Sarah Anderson and Seattle University assistant professor Elizabeth Dale, PhD, will bring a mix of field experience and research credentials to this session. They’ll start with an overview of recent research on donors of color, women’s philanthropy, LGBTQ giving, sexual harassment in fundraising, and gender leadership gaps among fundraisers. Next, participants will break out for small-group exercises and discussion. The session will conclude with a report back from each group, sharing discussion themes and what takeaways they’re going to bring back to their organizations.
