As a senior executive search consultant, Susan Clampitt has extensive experience successfully recruiting top leaders for foundations, nonprofits and government.  Her own background in leading and managing large and mid-sized organizations, as an executive or a board member, positions her as unique among recruiters.  She has a keen understanding of organizational structure and development, with a special ability for identifying outstanding talent.  Ms. Clampitt recruited scores of federal agency executives while serving in The White House Office of Presidential Personnel as director of arts and humanities appointments and women’s appointments, and continues to place board members, CEOs and Senior Vice Presidents in non-governmental organizations.

Ms. Clampitt serves as a consultant in organizational capacity building, including strategic planning; board and program development; marketing; fundraising, and executive coaching.  She held senior executive positions as executive director and general manager of WAMU-FM in Washington DC, one of the country’s leading National Public Radio (NPR) stations; deputy chair of the National Endowment for the Arts, where she directed the grants programs of a $100-million annual portfolio; associate administrator at the U.S. General Services Administration; founder and chair of a graduate program at Bank Street College of Education; and associate director of media and communications at the Museum of Modern Art.

At Arena Stage, Ms. Clampitt serves as an honorary board member, chairs a board steering committee and the communications committee, and serves on the long-range planning committee.  She is on the advisory board of the Creative Communities Initiative steering committee of The Community Foundation for the National Capital Region and the Arden Institute, a seminar program for leaders, formerly at Radcliffe College.

Ms. Clampitt is a Woodrow Wilson Foundation Fellow and a Helen Hayes Awards Judge.  In 2003, she was a recipient of the Fast 50 award for entrepreneurship from FastCompany magazine, a winner of the 2003 Mayor’s Arts Award, and was selected as Aspen Institute Fellow.  She received her bachelor’s degree from Douglass College at Rutgers and her master’s degree from Bank Street College of Education.
