Robert Alpaugh

Robert Alpaugh brings more than 25 years of experience in the nonprofit sector to Campbell & Company and its clients, including work in fundraising, capital campaigns, facility planning, board development, engagement and governance, strategic planning, organizational structure and capacity building.

In his initial work with Campbell & Company, Mr. Alpaugh served as interim vice president for development at the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra (8 months).  In this role, he assisted the Symphony’s new president in coordinating efforts among marketing, fundraising and public relations staffs while managing day-to-day fundraising operations as the Symphony searched for its fulltime development leader.

Building organizational strength and capacity through capital projects is an exciting and challenging undertaking, and Mr. Alpaugh has had the distinction of managing several capital and facility development projects.  He believes passionately that a capital project is only part of a larger vision: that of assuring the long-term sustainability of the organization.  Sustainability requires proper capitalization of the project, without long-term debt and putting in place the reserves and endowment necessary for sustainable growth.  This requires careful up-front planning at the very inception of the idea to build or launch a campaign.

As a leader in the arts and cultural arena, Mr. Alpaugh has worked in opera, theater, dance and music, serving as executive or managing director of institutions such as the Joffrey Ballet, Williamstown Theater Festival, Arizona Theater Company and Victory Gardens Theater.  While at Campbell & Company Mr. Alpaugh has had the opportunity to successfully transfer his experience to the human services and higher education sectors.

Mr. Alpaugh lectures frequently on nonprofit management, fundraising and board development.  He has served on the faculties of Arizona State University, University of Arizona, Emory University, Columbia College and the School of the Art Institute.  He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Florida State University and a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of North Carolina.  He volunteers with Children Affected by AIDS Foundation, the Arts & Business Council of Chicago and TimeLine Theatre Company.

“Courage Center has developed a valuable relationship with Campbell & Company over several projects. We first chose them in a competitive process to conduct a campaign feasibility study. They quickly got to the essence of what is unique about our organization, and gave us solid analysis and a plan to increase our readiness. We have since engaged them for an executive search and to provide interim leadership for our development department. All of those projects have been very successful and have left our development efforts smarter and stronger. We consider the folks at Campbell & Company to now be part of our team!”
